Within east London, the Newham London Borough /ˈnjuːəm/ is a borough of London formed from the Essex East Ham and West Ham, and, while combining the borough names compass points, the name reflecting creation, being a word of portmanteau.

Containing most of the Olympic Park including London Stadium, Newham was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics. For the borough as a new name, Newham was devised.

The 1889-1965 County of London did not include the majority of Newham. To provide classes, workshops and outreach opportunities, the organisation in Newham works with groups and schools.

36% of Newham employees are in work that is low paid, according to a 2017 report from Trust for London and the NPI; any London borough's percentage that is highest. With the highest rate of heart disease of London boroughs together with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Newham had the lowest life expectancy in 2018.

Canning Town, Beckton, East Ham, Custom House, Manor Park, Green Street, North Woolwich, Forest Gate, Stratford, and Plaistow, include libraries that Newham has. Part of the Plaistow's Leisure Centre of Newham, the Beagles Athletics Club of Essex and Newham has headquarters at the Stadium of Terence McMillan.

With the completed Line Extension, and with stations that are improved or new at Stratford, West Ham, and Canning Town, Transport in Newham is undergoing an upgrade.
